I'm a police officer, I live in London and I work in London about 10 minutes drive from my house. In London, it's advisable not to work in your home borough, but to be honest, I see people I've arrested all the time, it's an occupational hazard!

Your question has a wide range of answers. So let me try to clarify with the knowledge I have 1st hand. In the state of Mass. when taking the civil service test to become an officer, or to be potentially picked to be appointed to a reserve list ; then from that list you can be chosen to become a full time police Officer. (Of course this is all relevant to passing the exam and the psychological testing) You are given if memory serves me 4 preference choices on your exam as to where you would like to work, if you are a resident of a city/town you choose you have a better position on the list of potential appointments to the reserve list. All of these questions in the state of mass are handled and answered by Civil Service 1 Ashburton Place, Boston Mass. They govern the paperwork from testing to appointments and are very helpful if you go in person, if you choose to use the phone you will have a long day trying to get the answers you are looking for. I have worked as a college officer in Cambridge, Sherriffs Dept. and then I was finally appointed to the City that I reside in , (I was not chosen 2 years prior to that due to not living in the city, at least this was the answer I was given at the time, I had resided my entire life other than 5 years away at college and when I was called to the interview for my home town I had just moved to the neighboring city and I was a renter not a tax payer.) But the appointing authority only wanted individuals who where invested in the city...So you will need to do your research, You will need to find out who the appointing authority is sometimes it is not the Chief of Police in my case it was and still is the Mayor. Research what the appointing authority considers important in hiring, ask people you can trust as their are a lot of people out their who wan't the same job or a family member does and belive me they will leed you in the wrong direction if it will benfit them instead of you not always but be alert you should be any way if you plan on being a cop... and try to get on any type of Department that will give the training you need to be an Officer, get your emergency medical techinician certificate on your own and any other degrees / certificates that make you more useful to a department then the next person also when you invest in yourself to work in the field you are showing your commitment to help others and the bottom line is the city/ dept. will not have to incur the cost of training, and some depts. acknowledge your training by increase monetary increments in check I wish you luck in your quest to become a police officer, Do not worry about knowing people in the city you grew up in I did for a while and it turned out to be the best honest person that the city hired you to be help others always that is what a good cop does you make the decisions that affect peoples lifes and you take an oath, This is not High School you do not owe anyone but yourself and your reputation when you become an officer do not let a friend compromise yyour job /reputation and if they do they are not a friend and better off with out them in your life. I lost a lot fo what I thought were friends but they were users and my life is much better with them not part of it... You look at yourself in the mirror with a smile and can sleep at night then you are doing your job as a police officer to serve and protect t eh community for the best good luck see you on the right side of the law ssoon Godspeed

I have friends who are Police officers. Some dont actually like working in their home towns but there is nothing to say that you cannot work in your hometown. Two of my friends work in their hometowns.

I think during their probationary period they have to work away from their home town. After that they seem to be allowed to work in or around their home town, depending if there is a position to fill. Just of the cops I know this is what has happened with some of them.

It depends on where you work. If you work for a big department like NY or LA, you'll go where needed. Especially NY, where they have a program where they flood the more trouble precincts with rookies just to get officers on the street.

if your talking about British Police Force ...then normally when you enrol ....they ask you for a list of the areas you would like to work in ......you dont always get your choice as it depends a lot on where the vacancies are.....but after your probation you can apply to work in what ever area you like ....i have worked in my home town for many years ....even covering the area i live in ......

Yes, they most certainly can. It can create problems if you aren't used to dealing with friends and classmates who may expect favors. Its more about the needs of the agency than anything else

I assume you mean a sheriffs department or state police. In that case it doesnt matter where you live, they send you where you are needed.

In which country?
In the UK you could work in the same town but i'd advise against it. It's like sh**ing on your doorstep.
