Bingo! Yes its true. I have noticed it, too, and I talked with a friend who is a microbiologist about this. Here is his theory: when the first groupings of cells are being arranged in a newly concieved kitten, the brain and the fur cleave off from the same group of cells. It makes sense. We have two tortoiseshell cats, one light, one dark. The light is very intelligent and inquisitive and friendly, while the dark is timid and nervous. We had two similar cats years ago and the dark one was nervous and timid, the light, intelligent, friendly, and inquisitive. Wonderful cats, but different personalities. Black cats seem to be friendly and confident, gray cats seem to be pretty relaxed, white cats tend to be deaf. Yep, colors and personalities do seem to relate.

I read a whole book about cat color and personality once and it didn't have any real predictable conclusions about the relationship between the two. The cat's personality apparently comes more from its dad than its mom and is not connected to any genes for color.
The book did say that all grey cats tend to be shyer. It would be like making a generalization that dark-haired humans are more social or outgoing than blonds.

This sounds like prejudice thinking to me. A cat is a cat just like a human is a human! I've had cats of all colors and they all have their own personality. My cat Mia is brown and she has a little orange tabby markings on her face and white on her belly & chest. She has the most unique markings I have ever seen and she is about as sweet as she can be as well.

actually, I think it has more to do with how they're treated when they're little. My brother wrestled with his cat when he was a kitten, and he's a very defensive cat. I lived alone when I got my 16 year old cat (at 5 weeks) and he's my baby. My 6 year old cats were abandoned by their mom and turned into my vet at about 2 weeks. I took them home at 3 weeks. (and I had a very jealous 10 year old cat at the time) they spent most of the beginning of their lives in a room by themselves (kitten-proofed) and I'd go in there a couple of times a day to feed them and play with them and make sure proper things were landing in the litter box and not stuck to their fur or anything like that... but they're not nearly affectionate (or one person cats) like my older cat is.

My black&white "tuxedo" cat talks all of the time, but is not terribly playful. My orange tabby is pretty quiet (except when she cries outside the bedroom door) but she loves to play with rubberbands. I don't know if it has anything to do with their color. I think it's more the alpha cat thing.

that is what i love about cats - no 2 are the same. Our lady cat is a "cupboard lover", so every time she's being quite affectionate, i understand that she's after something (lol). Took on a stray cat, who's the entire opposite and can want to't get adequate affection.

No--in fact, many ORANGE cats I've seen are aggressive and crazy. It has nothing to do with their color--just like with people--they are all different.

In my experience:
Calicos have the most "personality" and talk more
Orange tabbies are the friendliest
Black cats are the most loving
Grey tabbies are the best all round (mousers, friendly etc)
But, there are always exceptions to everything :)

I know that tortoise-shell cats, black and orange cats, are always female and often exhibit cranky more stand-offish behaviour.
