i can't say either way, being a man. but i have been, and still am, guilty of this. i mean no disrespect, nor is it a come-on. as a southern born man, in my case, it's being friendly. that is a tradition here, and has been for about as long as anyone can remember. i have been warned, that times have changed, and many women do not appreciate this. i still make this mistake, but am doing much better. i don't think that anyone means any harm by doing this.

It used to, after listening to people tell me that when that is done to you the person doing it is patronizing you. But after observing this, especially a young girl or woman speaking to a older or elderly woman saying "sweetie" etc. it's really a reflexion of the speakers immaturity by her assuming a position of guide or caretaker in her demeanor towards the other person, who generally is not a wizened up crone or someone actually in apparent need of being spoken to like their an infant or senile or stupid, or about to fall over incapacitated any time soon. The speaker is being insulting and doesn't even know it, or is a cynical nasty individual who just enjoys doing it because she herself feels so terribly lowly catering as a clerk to people she feels sooooooo very superior to Dear :)But now I don't, I just say "oooh thank you deeerie and could you push this out to the car:)"

No, I just figure they are what I call people persons. They like people in general and so they use affectionate terms. Either that or they learned it from their mothers. But I do think a person who does that would have to like people to be able to say it.

I call my wife Pink Thing, Sugar Plum, Babe, Sweet thing and many many more not mentioned. It is my way of not holding on to a phrase that gets boring because she is everything of those things I call her and she loves it.
She calls me her Brown Thing...hoorah

It depends on the person and situation. Sometimes older people do that and I don't mind at all. When it's people younger than me, it is a little annoying.

No I assume that is the way they were brought up and those phrases just come naturally to their lips with no bad intent.
