They can't very well sit in the trees. And they can't go very far because when the winds die down, they reappear. Like magic!
Anyone truely know? Don't laugh! I'm serious, and have wondered this for quite sometime. (little birdy shelters we don't know about?)

As far away as possible I would think. But seriously, they know way ahead of time before we can even see the damn thing, they will have been long gone before it shows up. They're safer than we are. So, I guess you could say they're an early distant warning system. Sorta like canaries in a minshaft. When they come back they usually come from behind the storm, at a distance of course.
