why...
as I live next to a river that keeps bursting it's banks (thanks ma and pa!!) and fed up of having to clean up the house after it bursts.
It used to be done but not in the last ten years.
the wildlife can survive, just us humans have difficulty.

As hard as you may find this to swallow, it is probably a better idea for you to move. Almost all rivers spill over their banks at one point or another. Not only is this natural, but it is good for the wildlife that lives along the banks. Dredging the bottom or even building levies will stop the flooding for only so long. In the meantime you would still be paying for flood insurance.

All the new houses going up in every spare inch of land isn't helping. Because of streams and flood land being diverted into the nearest(cheapest) river.

Hi. Only if needed for ship clearance. Doing it for environmental purposes just disturbs any pollutants in the sediment.
