I've done lots of research and i really want them but i'd like another opinion. If you've got/had dreads that would be most helpful.

After reading 16 of ur replies i'd like to add that if washed with the right products (residue free) then they are as clean or even more so than 'normal' hair and that ur hair doesn't need to be shaved off they can be removed painlessly (apprently, i doubt it's painless personally). Also, u don't need to be rastafarian to have dreadlocks and thats a bit of a generalisation don't you think?

I've always had short cut hair even though i am a "mulato" (Brazilian mixed race), and never wanted anything to do with dreadlocks. They looked dirty and not attractive. About 21/2 years ago i changed my mind after i saw a site and they gave every little details about dreadlocks. I have small locks and i intend to leave to grow another couple of years and I am not a
Rastafarian as it is a form of belief and i do not necessarily follow it. I've got my own religious education and respect a Rastafarian belief but i like the fashion. A lot of people come to me and say that it looks good on me and some people want to touch it. It is not very common as i live in Portugal now. Children normally stare but i don't mind. My is clean as you can and
should wash your hair with dread. There are a lot of products available in England and the concept people have of a messy dirty hair is not general. Your hair can be clean and smell as good as a normal hair, but the looks is very exotic. I just regret i didn't had dreadlocks early in my life. My children got long hair now and they are thinking about dreadlocks specially the boy (he's
only 8).
Check the link below, they were very influential about my decision, as i follow their instructions and it's regrettable that i had no access to their products as it is not available in Portugal.
i used similar products, and it worked fine.
As for being rastafarian, you do not need to be rastafarian, but read about it and respect. there are lots of followers around and they take very seriously as you most probably take serious your religion.

Hope you get yours!!
just an advise...be pacient. It pays off!!

Let me first start off by saying that I have locks and depending on your hair type and maintenance schedule the outcome of your dreadlocks will vary. Secondly, Rastafarians are not the only people that have dreadlocks; it is just that Rastafarians are commonly associated with wearing dreadlocks. My dreadlocks are very thin and because I have coarse hair, my hair dreadlocked very fast. I love my hair and I have a professional job where people admire my hair & how I maintain it. I know that dreadlocks look different on black people than they do on white people, I am black and I can only tell you about my experience. Go with your instinct, it is not the end of the world if you do not like it you can chop it off and start again.

Ask yourself, Am I wearing dreadlocks for the style, or because I believe in Rastafarian concepts?
Then ask yourself if one should wear dread-locks for the style only. Many people who wear dread locks now-a-days or not true Rastafarians. Of course if one wears them as a style, it is freedom of choice, and in this civilised world no-one will interfere with your choice of style.Reminds me of words to a Jamaican song which have a line in it : Jah, Jah must smile when him see all those commercial dreadlocks... .

Dreads are a religious expression, just like the rasta colours if you're not rastafarian you have no business wearing them.

My ex wanted them for ages and got them eventually. No comment except to say that every morning I woke up with a shock as what looked like rats tails were all over her face. Seriously don't think they are attractive but each to their own.

ok well one of my best friends had dreads and she loved them while she had them. personally i think that they look really sloppy and you cant do much with your hair!! but once you have them you cant go back because you cant brush your hair at all see my friend she had to let them grow out to a certain point then she had to cut her hair really really short and she hates it now and she did get sick of the dreads really fast because she could only wear her hair down or in a ponytail!!

As a fully qualified hair stylist with 7 years experience at a west end saloon I believe it can look terrific.

The only downside is it may make the bulge in your knickers really quite large. If you look like a bloke I don't think I would recommend it.

Are you talking about turning your own hair into dreadlocks or having dreadlock style extensions put in?

If you're going to turn your own hair into dreadlocks, do remember that you basically rot it whilst it's still on your head, and you'll have to go skinhead when you're sick of them.
