There is a reason it is half as much, the S-10's are simply not very good trucks. The entire trucks dates back to the 80's, with the same old tech motors and problems. I consulted my new Consumer Reports 2007 Buyers Guide, and it (the 1998, not enough data on the 1999 which is nearly identical) scored much worse than average reliability wise in near every category. It handles horribly, and the interior is laughably cheap.
For some reason you still see plenty of these things on the road though. If you are mechanically inclined, you can probably fix most of the things that will be breaking. And if you do not have a lead foot and take care of it, you may be able to pay it off before it is no longer worth fixing it. Bear in mind, Carfax is really only of use in determining if it is a salvage vehicle or similar. Of no real use in telling you what work has been done mechanically or if it was almost totalled.
The S10 went almost unchanged for so long, get an even older one for less $$ and save some $$ for the inevitable repairs.

There are a few things to consider. Are you going to run it into the ground or sell it in a few years. Has either truck spent its life in an area where they salt the road? A southern truck is worth much more than a northern one. Do you live in an area that salts the roads etc. If you don't put a lot of miles on a vehicle or live in an area where the roads get a lot of salt I would go for the Chevy. If you live in the south or put a lot of miles on a vehicle every year I would get the Toyota. I lived in South Carolina for 13 years Toyotas run forvever. My brother has a corolla with 385,000 miles original Tranny and engine the orginal AC still works BUT its in the south no rust. I have a 96 RAV that three years ago when I moved back to PA had no rust on it. After two winters I can see the difference bolts exhaust, brake components are starting to rust. From what I've seen anything in this area 10 years and older is a rust bucket.

Well resell value.. a Tacoma will beat the S-10 any day of the year... I owned an S-10. Depends what you want. Gas mileage etc.. they both are comparable. I think the Tacoma running gear hasn't changed since umpteen something or other, so I'd stick with that. I have a 99 Tacoma with 160K on it, and went through 3 transmission, metallurgy problem on the counter shaft, previous owner speed shifted it so I had to have all the synchronizers replaced, and at 130K 2,3,4 bearings went out, due to excessive heat probably from the previous owner doing heavy downshifting. I still have it, and am happy with it. Toyota's run for ever, just as an S-10 if you take care of it properly.

s-10's are pretty good trucks.. 1/2 the price of the tacoma is also good. 50k is low. and insurance is fairly cheap for an s-10. tacoma's are also nice but go with what you can afford or if that isn't an issue then get what you want.

S-10's in that time frame had serious tranny issues. my 98 smoked the tranny at about 65k miles and even after rebuild was not right from the day I picked it up. There is/was an issue with a valve body or something like that.

Buy the Toyota. A Toyota with over 100,000miles is worth more than any Chevy,Ford,or Dodge.

They are good trucks, but you always need a good mechanic to confirm that everything is ok.
