Yes, I feel animals do feel embarrassed at times. If you just look into their eyes or notice the difference in the way they are acting you will be able to tell. As far as the coats go..I have a small dog with very little hair and we live in northern Alberta in Canada and he appreciates it, I see all kinds of dogs around here and it doesn't seem to matter to them. I think that once they get their coats on and realize that it keeps them warm they are glad to have them on.

no. It doesn't really register with them that they may look stupid or foolish, because they don't look into mirrors and see themselves like we so often do. that's one of the great things about pets. they don't feel self-conscious, and accept us for who we are, and aren't ashamed of their owners. the only thing dogs know about the coat is that they feel something bulky on them and it feels a little awkward at first. Some animals may be more irritated by them than others, but that's about it.
they don't get embarrassed, they just feel uncomfortable and slightly awkward, since they are used to their natural coats.
there are people giving examples of "emabarassment" such as hair cuts, or when they use the bathroom but this can all be explained by discomfort from something unatural or unusual going on. some people wear ridiculous things and feel no self-conciousness. embarassment is subjective and too complex for a dog to experience over a coat.

I think they do.
Example; We took in a Berlin Shepherd when I was a kid at my parents home. Older and had that long coat. My mother would cut her hair every summer. This poor dog looked so embarrassed after wards! She felt better I am sure but the look on the poor dogs face!!
They will get used to it! I remember that same dog got dressed up in all sorts of clothing (by yours truly). On Halloween I would make sure she had on cloths for trick or treating. She finally got so used to having everything put on her!
So yes I think they do get embarrassed but once they know that it is put on them with love (or taken off to feel better) your pooch will appreciate it and may even get to the point they want it on them :0)
Good luck!

Yes, they can feel embarrassed. Like people, some are more prone to this than others; some are easily embarrassed, others not. It depends partly on the animal's temperament and partly on the way you treat them. Some dogs get embarrassed when they get a haircut, and it is worse if you laugh at them. These impressionable dogs do better if you tell them they look great! They don't understand the words but they understand your tone and manner.
But discomfort with a sweater may have more to do with the fact that it feels strange.

they have no reason to be self-conscious, they treat the owner as number one and will only have strong reactions to persons/dogs it knows. animals aren't taught and can't comprehend etiquette like humans do - they can undertand basic stuff like 'do not sh.it in this house' but embarrassment is simply too complex for them to understand. sometimes they feel upset, like when they've done something wrong, but nothing more, i wouldn't say they got depressed or anything lol.
having a gay coat on wouldn't be embarrassing but it could make the dog uncomfortable

Embarassment is a social concept and a person has to be socialized to even think something is embarrassing--what is embarrassing in one culture is not in another. The dog wouldn't have been socialized to think that kind of thing is embarrassing.
I have seen dogs look as though they feel shame when someone gets mad at them for doing something , though.

Not only do they get embarrased, but I am pretty sure they get beat up by the other dogs in the neigborhood when they are seen in public wearing the sweaters...thems mean streets for a weiner dog in a cardigan...

I don't know, people say no, but I have seen my dogs do something stupid, and then look like they were embarrassed. Especially my male dog it gets really really cold where I live below zero most of the winter, and I used to put coats on my dog, he would look at me like "mom please don't make me wear this outside"

i don't know about the whole clothes thing, but my dog sits on the back of the chair a lot, and she falls off a lot too. Well when she falls off, she won't come out from behind the chair unless everyone in the room leaves. Now if that isn't embarrassment i don't know what is.

Cats get embarrased, especially if you laugh at them when they make a mistake.
Mine fell off the window sill recently and we all laughed and she sulked for ages. It was funny, though.
