Oil of cloves works great, tastes like crap but kills the pain.

It depends where the pain come from.
Do you have a cavity? It you do, use clove oil and apply it with a cotton baton right on top of the cavity. Let the oil sip into the hole.
If the pain is on the gum around the tooth. You can use benzocaine gel and rub it on the gum. Make sure you are not allergic to benzocaine, a lot of people are.
In both cases, avoid getting the substance on your tongue. It will numb you tongue and when you eat. You can choke easily.
If all fails. Take acetaminophen (if you are not a heavy drinker or have liver problem) or ibuprofen (take with food). Do not use Aspirin which is a blood thinner. You will bleed longer after the dental procedure.
Take care.

What do you mean by awhile? A tooth usually will cause pain because there is an infection..unless you have something like an impacted wisdom tooth. Antibiotics work to "quiet" the tooth but anything you do is going to sooo temporary and the infection will get worse causing greater pain. If worse comes to worse go to an ER they at least can give you an antibiotic and pain killer. Good luck..nothing worse than a toothache or an earache...

if the pain is due to an infected nerve, pain meds will work to relieve some of the pain temporarily. You need to see your dentist ASAP to get it checked out or it could end up ruining your whole weekend. If you call your dentist may be able to just call in pain meds and an antibiotic to help. Avoid putting anything too strong on the tooth as it can burn your gum tissue. Listerine is not a good idea. A cold compress on the outside may help if you are feeling throbbing.

Benzocaine will suffice nice until you go in for it...about 4 bucks for a small tube. Has worked for me and people I know have used it.
Walgreens, or some sorta drug store will have it over the counter.

And it tastes FAR better than cloves...
