Keep them busy.....sports are good. Sports that are structured and have great coaches beware of the coach that belittles.
Karate is good for hyperactive children...teaches a lesson while giving them something to do and it also shows reward by moving to the next level.
Children love to be rewarded (as do adults....paycheck) reward with point system something they have to earn.

As far as sugar goes....it gives a up and then a major down....sugar high ...sugar crash.

We tend to watch the dyes...coloring that is in the food.Red, yellow and blue.....We only buy clear Popsicles and no jello....

Sugar does not cause hyperactiviy in children. I wrote a psychology paper on it in college. It is usually the activity that causes the child to be hyper. Parties and events create excitement which most people call hyperactivity. Try to channel your child's energy into something else. Try something like karate where your child can still exercise yet they are learning how to focus and follow directions.

First take all sweets away. It is not a myth that sugar can cause kids to go bonkers. Second, try more outside activities and require a lot of energy to be burned. T-ball, swimming, sledding, etc.

Give the child more things to keep him busy. Praise him or her when they are well behaved and explain to him when he is going overboard that it is not appropriate and why.

Go to a doctor and see if he will prescribe something for him/her to calm them down. Sometimes that is the only way to do it.
