Toxoplasmosis is caused by the obligate intracellular protozoan Toxoplasma gondii.
The parasite was originally identified in the small North African rodent Ctenodactylus gundi, hence its name. "Toxo"- refers to the curved or arcuate shape of the organism, not to a toxin.
It is widely distributed among domestic animals and humans throughout the world.

parasite, that is found in the ground which ends up in cats, which gets deficated in to litter boxes. treated with bactrim. But it will cause birth defects to a fetus who's mother has not been exposed before. Most people have been exposed without knowing and the body has produce anitbodies to them. But a mom who has not been exposed is putting a fetus at risk. Hence the reason why any pregnant mom should not be around litter boxes.

I believe it is bacteria. It can infect a person when a person has contact with cat litter, or uncooked or undercooked venison (wild meat) and then morally attack a fetus in a pregnant woman. It is a dangerous infection, and should be very much avoided. Most people that have owned cats have caught it, mistaken it for the flu, and don't usually catch it again, because they have developed antibodies. Pregnant women are advised, however, not to change cat litter while pregnant
