I've been dealing with depression for awhile and have just recently been put on Lexapro for it. I've also been going to talk therapy for that. I'm a college student who lives at home and my family is very pessimistic about everything. My boyfriend just broke up with me a few days ago, so that's not helping matters any. What can I do to feel better and more positive about my life? I don't mean quick fixes like alcohol or one night stands or anything....I mean some things I can do to feel more like a whole person, to help me have a more positive, optimistic outlook on things.

You can try prayer. No matter what religion you practice, whatever higher power you believe in can give the most guidance. I too will pray for you. It gets greater later!!!!!

You really need to analyze your situation, the good and bad and then realize what you should be doing instead of what you actually are doing. I have been struggling with depression, anxiety and I am agoraphobic. But I do slowly notice a change now that instead of spending all my time wishing life was better or thinking that it doesnt get any worse, I am putting that energy into understanding that I spend so much time worry about these things when I should be pushing myself to do the things I once enjoyed. Try talking a walk just to refresh your mind, look at everything around you and see how beautiful it all actually looks, at night drive around and look at Christmas lights actually take in what this world is offering you. We all seem to take for granted the beautiful sites that truly do boost your mood. Join a gym, working out will make you feel good inside and out and thats a half hour a day that you arnt thinking about how sad you actually feel. Go skating, anything productive, even if you are doing these things on your own you are going to feel good about actually doing them and of course somedays you are just going to feel horrible and all you can do is cry but just ask yourself, is that what you want to do, the longer you put off getting back to the old you the longer it will take to be on the right path. good luck to you!

Make a list of your blessings and of the things that are not blessings... look at that list every time you feel down and you should feel better... did you ever hear the saying..." I used to be sad because I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet" ? Keep that in the back of your mind... it puts a whole new prospective on things... :o)

The best way to feel better about your life is to give your life to Jesus. Jesus said that whomever will save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake will gain life more abundantly.

You see, the devil comes to kill, and steal , and destroy. And that is what is happening to your life right now. The devil wants to keep you far from God as possible. This depression you are feeling may be a gift from God to help you turn from your sins and into the loving arms of Jesus.

Jesus died for your sins so that you could be forgiven. Without Jesus' sacrifice on the cross than you and I or anyone else could never be forgiven by God because we all sin against Him. When we lie, cheat, steal, lust, hate, covet, etc., we prove ourselves sinners in dire need of forgiveness. Please seek Jesus today to forgive you of your sins and offenses against a loving God. Once you repent of your sins and ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit than you can become a new creation and live for God and no longer for yourself. Living for yourself leads to death, living for God leads to abundant eternal life.

God Bless.

Trying volunteering at a homeless shelter or with disadvantaged kids. Also, physical exercise helps.
