They were formed to protect civilians who went to Jerusalem on pilgrimages. But, they became thieves and stole from the Holy city. The church started killing them off at one point, as they became too powerful for the church to control. Some say their mission was to find the Hole Grail.....for themselves. They never really found anything of importance.
They were finally stopped by Saladin and his army.
