I am an acrylic painter. I heard that I could paint oil over acrylic when it was dry to get the benefit of slow dry time and blending to refine the painting. has anyone who has done this have any advice?

Isn't gesso itself acrylic based? Oil goes over that?

Yes, you can use oils over acrylics. Just use a primer compatible with both types of paint, and be sure the acrylic is completely dry before using the oils. Also, try not to put the acrylic on too thick. Oil paint needs a surface with a bit of tooth to adhere. Remember, you can not use acrylic over oil. Be careful if blending with solvents. Don't believe the naysayers above. If you are still uncertain, try a test on a small canvas. Your painting will not crack if you let the acrylic dry completely and don't flex your canvas, or use a solid medium to paint on.

Most canvases are primed with Gesso, so yes, oils will go over that, too. You shouldn't have any problems painting in oil over acrylics; you just shouldn't do the opposite--acrylics over oil. I'll bet it will turn out great!

Not a good idea! Your painting won't last for a long time without cracking. Check your resources on painting over acrylic/oils.

Ive seen it done with proper precautions, but it is tedious, acrylic over oil will not work for a finished product, but a friend of mine who does really large pieces will test ideas a lot of his paintings take him months to do so after the oil has dried if he is not sure of the idea that he has he will test it with acrylic over the oil then remove it. im not sure what all that entails i never watched him do it. but like always its all trial and error with new ideas.

No, but the benefits of slow drying time make oil a preferrable medium.
