Bohemia. St. Wenceslaus wasn't actually a king, but was the Duke of Bohemia.

Bohemia. . .but have you ever really considered the words of the carol. . .

'Good King Wenceslas looked out on the Feast of Stephen. .'

Feast of Stephen is 26 December, so in Eastern Europe it is cold. .like really really cold.

'When the snow lay round about deep and crisp and even'

OK It really IS cold

'Brightly shone the moon that night thought the frost was cruel'

Not to labour the point it is very very very cold indeed

'When a poor man came in sight, gathering winter fuel'

Ah! so the peasant is gathering sticks for his fire in the middle of a bitter cold heavily snowed in night . . no wonder he's a peasant. . . .

'Hither page come stand by me etc . '

Roughly translated. . 'Over here, lad who is that guy in the snow. . where is is house what kind of house is it?

Then the punch line(s)

"Sire he lives a good league hence'

A league is 5,5 kilometres about 3 and a half miles. .

'Underneath the mountain. . that means he lived in the shadow of the mountain. . you know where there isn't much sun and on a frosty nighty the colder air from higher up comes flowing down like a super-cold river. .

'Right against the forest fence'. . .

Hold on now. . this guy has left house in the middle of a bitter cold night. . ploughed his way, 3 and a half miles, through really heavy snow to collect sticks when he lives RIGHT by the forest. .

Do me a favour. . how believable is that?

Bohemia (the Czech Republic). He was born in 907 at Prague, and was martyred 28 September 929. More info at the site below.
By the way, he was also known as Vaclav, so Polish leader Vaclav Havel was named after him.
