Mining and quarrying operations result in a lot of underground water which must be pumped out to allow the operation to continue safely. The water is usually acidic (pH less than 7) and can kill plants and animals in any stream to which this water might be pumped. The mine operator should pump the water into a pond dug on the surface and add lime to reduce increase the pH to very close to 7 (neutral). The operator should also be sure that suspended solids are settled out of the water to make it clear (by adding a flocculant) before it is discharged. There are also limits on the things (like dissolved metals) which are allowed to be in the water when it is discharged.

Yes a oil field truck had 4 bags of caustic soda fall off the truck. Following hazardous wast procedures we sweep it up and placed it in a plastic barrel. There was still a lot of dust on the road so what u do. It is simple , I got some HCL acid and put it in a garden sprayer and sprayed it over the caustic soda. IT bubbled giving off CO2 and when it quit bubbling stopped spraying. at that point what did i have. Common table salt and watter. At this point u don't need to do anything except flush it off. This is what we should do with all hazardous chemicals.

A real life example is when you get heart burn due to acid in your stomache escaping towards the Esophagus causing alot of pain. We take that white medcine which is alkaline and so neutrolises the acid and releives the pain.

( I just realised you said environment!)

The high levels of Carbon dioxide from cars and factories cause acid rain. The acid rain can then cause damage to trees and plants

mexican companies produce a chemical called HF hydrogen flouride some of this leaked once as a gas and began reacting with skin on humans..........i dont remember the science behind it but it had to do with the ph of HF and the PH of humans/skin. Salene was the solution after alot of deaths and suffering(burned skin). apparently salene was neutral and the hf was severly not nutral thuss causing the reaction with human tissue lungs and so on. if i remember correctly the salene even helped scarring return to almost normal and HF burned eyes regain vision.

Small scale - Ant bite, add baking soda
Large scale - Acid rain, stop polluting air
Soil can be too acid or alkaline for certain plants to grow in it. This can be solved by digging stuff in (don't know what, sorry).
