I just got an 11 week old cockatiel today, and was just wondering what ways you can ease it into it's new home. Right now he is in his cage just in complete shock. When we opened the door he flew out. At the store he was the sweetest bird. It is completely understandable that he is just freaked out becuase of his new environment. I was just wondering on some ways, so that he can be calmer and more comfortable with us.

The first thing you need to do is get his wings clipped. A panicked bird may fly into things like windows or ceiling fans and be injured or killed. Once his wings are clipped, put the cage in a room where you will be for a while, open the door and then just go about your business, talking to him every few minutes, but don't approach the cage. Do this for several days. Even if he comes out of the cage, don't approach him right away. Wait a few days then stand near the cage and talk to him, still not trying to touch or pick him up. Of course, you will have to put him back in his cage. Place your index finger in front of him and say "Step up!" Move slowly. Birds learn by repetition, patience and calmness. After several days of just letting him get used to his new home, he will start to seek you out. When he lets you pick him up, just hold him and talk to him. Eventually he'll let you pet him. Just take your time, be patient and give him lots of space and love!

How does his new "home" compare to its previous cage. Some birds do not like sudden changes so you may have to gradually introduce new items like toys or types of perches. Furnish the new cage as close as possible as it was acustomed to before. I have toys that one bird is scared of but is anothers favorite play thing. And as with all babies pay it a lot of attention.

When I received my first tiel years ago, I opened the cage every day for a couple of weeks, he was fed and had plenty of clean water every day, but it took him that long to come out of the cage and get used to me and his surroundings. I always had a buffet of pasta, peppers, corn and apples for him. One day he came out of his cage flew to my shoulder, squawked really loud in my ear! and went to the buffet. He would not eat, but if I picked the food up he would eat. Once he lets you know what he wants or remembers, you can let him know what you want him to know. Tiels are very social and will do anything to make you know what makes them happy.
