Some compelling books about the Bible:
Misquoting Jesus: Who changed the Bible and Why? by Bart Ehrman
Who wrote the Bible? by Richard Freidman
The Incredible Shrinking Son of Man by Earl Doherty
Other books I've found compelling:
The Blind Watchmaker by Richard Dawkins
From Preacher to Atheist by Dan Barker
The Demon Haunted World by Carl Sagan

Does playboy count?
One i wouldn't call compelling but rather interesting is THE SATANIC BIBLE. The first half of it is actually a good philosophy for life. Take responsibility for what you do, Love those who deserve it and hate those who deserve it too.
Let's not forget the best idea of all the ninth satanic statement.
Satan has been the best friend the church has ever had. He kept them in business all these years! VERY TRUE! TAKE AWAY THE DEVIL AND CHRISTIANITY DIES!

There are 2: The Once and Future King by T.H.White and Jazz by Toni Morrison.
The Once and Future King because it's so moving. You get to follow King Arthur through his whole life, faults and fears and all. I cried at the end.
Jazz is just like music put into words. It's in my opinion her most lyrical book. Just read the first page. You'll see what I mean.

Honestly... this sounds funny, but I really liked the Narnia books. I liked how religion played into the story, and especially felt that Aslan was a great representation of what a God could be- loving, forgiving, and strong. (And I'm not Christian, btw). I especially like the part where Aslan mentions that others may have called him by another name- but they believed in what Aslan stood for and hence were really believing in him. I think the book promotes imagination, tolerance, creativity, love, acceptance.. I could go on.

The Gospel of Judas. Very intriguing, I can see why the self appointed righteous have kept it hidden for so long. Even then it was discovered by accident. Judas was part of God's plan, Judas was Jesus' best friend. Judas was the only one to see the secrets of the dimensions or kingdoms. Judas is in heaven. To bad a lot of the pages are missing. So many gaps. You have to read it over several times before you start to understand. Read it. You decide if it's real or not. Peace.

The course in miracles.
It is the book that Jesus wrote to clear up all the misconceptions the bible created. At first I was very skeptical when I heard this but after reading it there is no doubt left in my mind that this is his work. The love shines through just like it does in parts of the new testament.
I have already worn out one hardback copy and I am working on my second.
It has taught me that all of us are beloved parts of God, and has allowed me to see the light of God in all whom I meet. This has been a great blessing to me.
Love and blessings Don

Oohh!!! The rise and fall of the Third Reich! Such a horrendous, yet compelling era. I enjoy reading about WAR WAR 2 and the events leading up to it, along with the Nazi Regime conspiracy's and what nots. Very very wonderful, and I highly recommend it to you.

The Satanic bible by Anton Devay. He explains his religion clearly because most people are wrong about what it is about. They do not worship the devil nor do they sacrifice animals.
