You can't overfeed a kitten! They eat about 4 times as much on average as an adult. If he goes to his dish, he is HUNGRY. Two cans is not much for most kittens!!
You didn't say his age, but is it possible he isn't eating the dry food well? They really can't chew it until their teeth are bigger.
If he is very thin, ribs showing, etc, in spite of eating a lot, he may have a parasite. You should have a vet check a stool sample and look him over.
The good news is, he will eat less when he is grown!

Most kittens do come with worms and it is an important part of his medical care that he be dewormed with medicine from the vet.
When you say you feed two cans a day I assume that is two three-ounce cans which I can also assume is Fancy Feast as it is hard to find 3-ounce cans in other brands. That is the right amount - around 5.5 to 6 oz. per day. If it is a low-qualilty meat (such as Fancy Feast, Science Diet or whatever from the grocery store) you are not satisfying his needs for good, wholesome meat protein.
Same goes for the dry food. You need to look at the ingredients listed on the bag. By law they must be listed. If the first ingredient is by-product meat that's awful food (feet, feathers, entrails, heads - usually of chickens.) With many brands after the by-product meat with be two sources of some kind of corn. So if you give him these foods he has a diet of 2/3 corn - not nutritious for a cat who as an obligate carnivore needs meat and moisture for up to 60% or better of his diet.
If you look into Eagle Pack, Blue, Natural Balance, Solid Gold or Felidae you will see the first TWO ingredients from a wholesome human-grade meat source. The third will be fillers such as brown rice, millet, oats, pea etc. Natural Balance and Felidae have quality canned foods too. We don't have the Blue in my area so I don't know what is available in their line. Usually at www.petfooddirect you can call up any food you might be considering and read the ingredient labels on the web which I have found great for choosing quality foods for my cats.
Some of the better foods may cost a little more and surprisingly not significantly. I have an 8 by 10 page in small print with foods, ingredients, prices etc.
If you use foods where the first two ingredients are high-quality meat you do not have to worry about "kitten" food. A bag of Science Diet has by-product meat and two corn products as their first three ingredients and it is very pricey at $2.09 per lb. Solid Gold is $1.50 per lb, Natural Balance $1.66, Felidae, $2.10 - one penny more than the SD kitten.

All kittens are born with worms, in most cases, more than one kind. That is why a stool analysis, at his first visit, is very important.
Next, growing kittens are like teenage boys. They are growing at a very rapid rate and this takes food. Keep a bowl of dry available at all times and feed canned morning and evening. That's how I do it and I have some healthy cats. One of them is 21 and the other is 20. Several teenagers too.

Kittens usually eat a lot more than cats, as they're in the most important developmental stage. The rule of thumb is to feed the kitten as much as s/he can eat. I usually leave free flow kibbles for mine. They'll eat when they are hungry. Like what Mac says, you can't overfeed a kitten, so don't worry about it. ;)
It'll be a cause for concern if doesn't have a healthy appetite, looks sick, or is losing weight even though he's eating a lot.

kittens are food recycling plants--they grow so fast they need the nutrition. they are spozed to eat about 5 cans--3 oz--every day--leave dy food in an auto feeder for snacking, you can feed less wet--i give my huge kitten 3 cans every dsay, and dryfood as he wants/needs it. at 1 year of age, i cut kitty down to 2 cans /day--then 1 can/day. but growing and pregnant cats both need lots and lots of food.
also, make sure the kitties get to the vet for their baby checks--for worming and shots, so they stay healthy.

Please don't act gross because this is for the good of your kitty, but when he goes #2, open it up and look through it for "bits of rice like objects." These would be worms. If you don't like doing this, take him by the vets or do what I do, go to the vets and ask for something for both types of worms. Good luck.

Yeah, he could have worms. Get him to a vet.
Where did you get him? If you found him on the street, he may just be terrified he won't have a next meal. That will pass.
But you still need to get him to a vet.
