Hi!

Well I have a 17 week old staffie bull terrier puppy, and over the last few days his poo has been getting softer and sloppy (I hope none of you are eating your tea!! lol) He is acting normal, sleeping, eating bit less, but still eats well. He plays and generally he is ok.
We use a dry dog food and usually add water to it, but last week my fella gave him just the same food but dry. Could it be this? as we dont feed him human food or anything like that... I am worried he may be ill, I wouldnt know what do if he was badly ill!

Any advice appreciated

Hes not ill - puppies always go through sloppy spells with their poo - they do have sensitive digestive systems and eat so much rubbish while exploring the world its totally normal to get loose sometimes.

To firm him up - stop adding water to his food - he doesnt' need it any more. Sprinkle a little bit of weetabix on his food to help firm him up.

Now split his daily allowance of food into equal portions - if you are currently feeding him 2 times a day - make it 3 - if you are currently feeding him 3 times, make it 4.

It is very likely that there is too much food going through his system for him to process it properly.

Little and often is the key.

I had to take my 9 week old English Bull Terrier to The vet The other day because of the same reason. He was totally normal hadn't lost weight or anything and was eating and drinking fine. Play fighting like hell with my other one so I couldn't put my finger on it, I tried him on chicken and rice for a few days to see if it made any difference but it didn't. I was in constant contact with his breeder getting advise etc. On the 4th day of him having the trots I took him to the vet as diarrhoea in puppy's is dangerous.
They said his temp was the high end of normal so gave him a shot of antibiotics, prescribed some antibiotic tablets, a tube of paste which gave him nutrients and support to his digestive system and asked me to worm him yet again.
I followed Vets orders and was a bit dubious because after a couple of days There was no difference but on the 4th day he had a normal poo. I was so excited it was pretty sad really.
I'd say pop him along to the vet better to be safe than sorry.

I have 8 staffys and when you change the diet the poo does become soft and can be runny try adding goats milk to the food or keep adding hot water. Maybe he needs some tinned meat food try pedigree chum for puppies thats what i use and when i changed thier food to junior food the poo got runny and soft.
If you are really worried just give your vets a call and speak to the nurse. Staffs always get the runs so i would say dont worry.

HI Well you might want to look in some spots you would least expect as it might be hidden somewhere... Also Someone else had mentioned the pup may need stimulation and I Agree with that You may want to take your pup out side and gently rub a Q-Tip on his hiney and he may think Oh mommy wants me to go and it may all come @ once so be prepared Also you need to find out if your pup has been wormed as it is very Possible he is constipated from worms or a change of food so call your Breeder where you purchased the pup and ask these questions just to be on the safe side Good luck to you with the new Baby

It might be that you are simply feeding him too much. Overfeeding can cause a dog's poo to go sloppy. I always add water to complete food - I'd rather the food swelled up before it reaches the dog's stomach than after when there's a danger of bloat.

Why are you adding water to his complete diet???????? You should be feeding it dry and leaving him with a bowl of clean water. Adding water makes it sloppy, will make his poo sloppy, won't keep his teeth clean and will go rancid once it gets warm. It is designed to be fed dry. Put a big bowlful down and leave the pup to pick and nibble at it through the day. I suspect that you add watwer to it because you want him to gulp it all down quickly as he would with tinned food. If that's what you want, then feed tinned fod as that's how it should be eaten. Kibble should be fed ad-lib.
Hopefully you are feeding a good puppy diet.
BTW what IS it with all these daft people saying that puppy food is "too rich" for puppies. Don't they REALISE that puppy food needs to be richer, have higher levels of fat and protein in, so that puppies can develop properly into healthy adult dogs?

try v=changinmg the dry food to a lighter type, you may find the food id now to rich for him, also best to only give it as dry food without water as digests better

I'd ring the vet and ask them what you asked us. It may not need a visit.

have you had him checked by a vet? could be worms or merely acclimation to new anything.

Better worm him just to be sure.
