This dog is not mine, she is my girlfriend's parent's. I like to take her for walks in open fields though. I'd like to let her off of her leash, but I'm afraid she will just run wild and I'll never get her back. For now I just want her to have my attention, listen to me, and stop yanking on my leash. I know she is a sled dog, but she still needs to know some commands! She is only a year old by the way, so I'm sure she can still be molded! Thanks!

If this dog is a northern breed (Malamute, Siberian, Samoyed), DO NOT LET IT OFF LEASH!!! It WILL run off and won't listen to commands to come back. No doubt about it, and if you don't believe me, just go to the National breed club for any of these dogs and read up on their negative traits.

If you don't know how to properly train a dog, you need to buy a good book, need to enroll in a training class, need to discuss the matter with someone you know whose dog IS well trained.

There is just too much to go into involving training a dog to type here.

Good luck and keep that girl physically contained, whether by leash or by fence...or she WILL run off.

What breed? Alaskan Husky? Malamute? or a wolf cross bread?... umm I lived in Alaska for 10 years, and around many that ran the Iditarod, and well they are always hyper! They always want to go go go. I mean if you have 6 dogs, that will pull a four wheeler around on trails in the wood for hours, and not get tired, what does that tell your about their desire to run and how much energy/endurance that they have? ... if they are wolf cross breeds, they require daily interaction. Depending on the % of wolf, the higher ones can sometimes turn on you, its their natural animal instincts. As far as it running away and never coming back, that can happen with any dog, wife, boyfriend etc.. its life. It is an uncertainty in the animal kingdom. Good luck.

As far as learning "commands" its like any dog. You teach them to sit... by forcing them to sit, and reinforcing sit. On the directional commands, if you live in a snowy area, get a ski-joring harness for cross country skis. Other than that, I have no idea.
