Discovery area is an area that allows children to explore their world through their senses.
Touch-- different textures
Smell-- guess the smell
Sight-- exploring colors
Hearing-- listening to different sounds
Taste-- trying new foods
There are so many different things to discover and that area when labeled as such it is usually a science center. Which would contain different types of things depending on the age of the children

Infants and young children do not learn in the same way as older children and adults. Older children and adults can learn passively, in other words, teachers can teach them subjects in a passive manner . However infants and young children learn in an active manner, they must be directly involved in their learning through their senses:hearing, touch, taste, sight and smell. A discovery area promotes this view of active learning, It is an area which provides many types of materials and objects, each object has different characteristics and infants/young children explore these objects. By exploring the variety of objects provided, they are learning of the differences and similarities in the objects and what they can do with the objects. Discovery areas promote active learning which is how infants and young children learn.

It depends on the program. In some schools, a discovery area is a table, filled with different sensory materials like sand, water, soil, rice, beads, etc. In some areas, it is a science set up, with tools for exploring (magnifying glasses, scales, rulers) and items to explore, like seeds, machines, pets, plants, or rocks.
