is she clawing and biting hard or gently??
if gently, you are a litter mate and keep rubbing her tummy. if she tries to draw blood, do not rub tummy any more.
kitty's tummy is a protected part of them--vulnerable to death attacks--so no one goes near who is not trusted.
if the nips and scratches are gentle, she is loving you and enjoys the rub. if her ears go sideways--back off. that is a warning they are not cool with the program. if not--keep rubbing.

Obviously, I wouldn't try it again. She's telling you she doesn't like it, so stop. If you really want to do this, gradually work up to it over days and weeks (pet her on the side, and work closer to her belly). Like some of the others suggested, I think this is an issue of trust. Cats do not like to feel vulnerable and want to be in control of the situation. But if you are loving and kind, some cats will eventually let you rub their belly. My cat allows me to do it to him, but not my husband - I have a closer relationship to my cat and he trusts me more. But even my cat does not want to be touched on his belly all the time. Learn to read your cats signals that would clue you in as to when to quit petting so that you do not get scratched.

I have a book on cats, it says that cats like to lie on their bellies waiting for you to rub it and immediatly bite you. Apparently it is a sign of affection. don't worry about it

Females are generally more protective about having their stomach touched, especially if they are pregnant. But besides that your cat might not like having her stomach rubbed.

Cats don't usually let people rub their bellies, only if they really truely trust them.

When a cat exposes her belly to you, she isn't asking you to rub it, she's telling you she trusts you enough to expose her most vulnerable parts.
When you reach for it, she feels betrayed and attacks you.

A lot of cat's don't like that . mine do but it depends on their mood. I think they feel vulnerable when on their back and don't want anyone crossing the line while in their vulnerable position.

It is natural instinct. Predators usually go for the belly or the throat.
