I've just moved here (last week) and am waiting for some friends to join me in ny next weekend. I am alone and really want to do something interesting/entertaining this afternoon (Sunday) I have already walked my feet off around the shops - so shopping is out. What can I do/where can I go alone today to spend my time constructively? (Museums and galleries I want to save for when my friends arrive.)
I'm staying in midtown, near Port Authority btw! Thanks!

Catch a cruise around the harbor which has a tour guide explaining in detail the sights of NYC. NY Waterway offers daily 90 minute tours around the island. Great & exciting way to get to know your new home a little better. You can catch a free shuttle bus right there (near port authority) on W.42nd St & 5th Ave (in front of library on 5th) to the midtown terminal (W.38th St & 12th Ave). Once there you can catch the cruise for $22.

By the way, if you plan on doing something different for New Year's Eve, they're offering a cruise that night.. for $75 you'll have champagne toast, noisemakers, DJ, live coverage of Times Square, coffee & dessert bar & they'll have a cash bar there too!

Hope this helps a little!

take in a play if there are any matinees, eat a late lunch at Katz Deli, take in the Christmas Show at Carnegie Hall, eat at Carmine's if you like Italian food, or go to Little Italy and visit there many pastry shops (the pastries are to die for)!
