Its actually a very ugly shade of green...the shade you see on the Brazilian national flag (looks good on the flag not the walls). I am tenant so cant change the color of the walls, sadly. I want a color which will tone down the "greeness"

The complementary color of green is red so whatever color you do choose, stay away from the red family as it will just make the green stand out even more so.

Since green is in the natural color family, I would tend to stay with a very neutral color. Try using a color from the beige family (keeping in mind to stay away from any beige that hints at pink). You'll want to look at beiges that tend toward the grey, sand, bamboo, beige linen, beige taupe (if you go taupe, you don't want to go too greeny in the taupe so stick to taupes that lean towards brown and grey).

Enhance the whole thing by grounding it with black in some accessories. And remember to create harmony, you really should use 3 colors: 1 dominant, 1 medium and 1 accent color. Try your green, grey taupe and some cushions in different patterns but all with the same family and one accent color such as tobacco brown. And yes, still add some black to ground it all (black is the combination of all colors and is therefore not a color).

Whatever you do, keep the focus away from the green by not putting anything else green like that and try hanging some really big art or a gorgeous huge mirror on the largest space of the green walls. That will detract even more from the green you don't like.

Whatever you do, have fun. I know it's not easy if you have to deal with a color that you don't like living with but have courage, there are ways to detract from that color.

What tone and tint of green walls? What look are you going for? Subdued, bright or somewhere in between. These should all factor in to the answer. If you are able to make a trip to Home Depot or another hardware or decorating store, go to their paint section and take a look at the "idea pamphlets" they have there. You can usually find a similar color to the color you have on your walls and take a look at the colors that they suggest to pair with it. This will give you a good idea of what will look best and where to go from there.

I think clean white curtains are nice with any green. Maybe adding a few houseplants woud enhance the ugly green. Or see if you can put up a fresh coat of paint if it is really ugly.

You did not say what color green... dark, light, medium, etc.. BUT In general, I would opt for a shade of brown.. and in particular, a light beige color.... and if you wanted a coloring in the curtains other than JUST beige.. then a beige and white

use a vertical stripe of light beige and a darker stronger brown. btw--regarding answer above black is NOT the combination of all colors--brown is. black represents an absence of light reflection and that is why it is not a color.
