In most areas, it's not convenient at all. The phone lines go down all the time. Depending on where you are, some areas still don't have computers. Those that do, the lines go down, service goes down or gets too busy, not to mention waiting lines to use the computers.
If you're trying to call military in Iraq, it can't be done. Only military to military calls can be made.

It depends on where they are. I was in Kirkuk for 2004 and it was fairly easy to get to a phone, there were several phone banks of payphone and I had access to a free phone once a day for 15 mins at a time. The phones went down a lot though. There was no way to make a call to Iraq without a special military connection and phone.
The internet is pretty easy to get to as well, but went down a lot.

It depends on where the soldier is located. For us this last deployment I was able to talk to my husband about 3-4 times a week. I was not able to call because our unit doesnt allow cell phones to be taken on deployments.
