VERY GOOD QUESTION!!!these cars don't even slightly resemble a "stock car",,,,you can't even tell one brand of car from another,,,they all look a like!!!!!!!!! front wheel drive cars made into rear wheel race cars,,,4 doors are now 2 doors,,,,I'd like to see that V-8/rear wheel drive, Monte Carlo,Charger, Fusion in the dealers show room on Monday,,,it use to be the saying in stock car racing,,,"Race on sunday, buy on monday",,, I've followed racing for a loooooooooong time,,,some changes have been good,,some not so good,,,its really sad when all the cars look the same except for different numbers and some butt ugly paint jobs

Where do you stop the term "stock"? Way back in the day, a lot of driver's would use their own car, bench seats, lap belts and all. What wins on Sunday sells on Monday became because it was true. You could walk in and buy the same car that won Sunday's race. It is still stock car racing but the term "stock" has evolved over the years. Stock has more to do with the rules than anything else now. Safety aside, Can you imagine how boring a race would be if stock still meant truly stock?

It's not just safety. When it was more stock, one car dominated more. Different cars at different times. But NASCAR doesn't want one car to dominate. (That's for Formula One). They want all the cars to be close enough that the best driver/team at least has a shot no matter what they drive.

Since aerodynamics has gotten so important, one car was starting to dominate sometimes. NASCAR messed around with spoilers to try to fix that. The "car of tomorrow" is not for safety (it will have new safety stuff, but they could have put in on the old cars), it's to equalize the aerodynamics.

The only thing stock to a stock car is the hood, roof, rear deck.NASCAR should go back to getting the cars from yhe manufacturer and make stock cars stock.

I feel the cars can be safe without ridiculously distorting their shape, such as the current Dodge Charger with it's 'duck bill' grille.

I wish they would go back to a more of a stock style. the COT does look like"a flying brick" to quote Smoke.
