It takes a different amount of time depending on the person; personally, mine took about six months to completely heal but then I'm a smoker and probably didn't look after it as well as I could have :-)

As for caring for it, I have found (after 15 or possibly more) peircings
that using a bottle of hydrogen peroxide (at 3% - your chemist or drugstore will sell it over the counter) dabbed on with cotton wool to be very effective for removing the "crustyness" then low concentration (3-5%) of tea tree oil is excellent for sterilising and lubricating the peircing.Tea tree is also very good at removing the infected scars that can sometimes appear on these peircings too. A word of warning though; both of these at too high a concentration will burn - although not terribly. Just be careful!

Failing all of that, a solution of sterile salt and warm, boiled water will do a pretty good job of cleaning it.

With care, I'm pretty sure that they can heal within a few weeks, at least to the point of not being sore anyway. If all else fails, find a reputable peircer, and go to them for advice - I've found that they're pretty much always helpful, and if they're not, go somewhere else!

Granted no infections, it can take up to 6 months to heal. If you smoke double the healing time. Follow the instructions your piercer gave you and make sure to do your salt gargles twice daily!
