You can use a simple DC pancake gear motor. Most people have seen these things on barbeque grill rotisseries, for example.

Go to www.grainger.com or www.mcmaster.com and search on gearmotors. You are looking for 1/100th horsepower or so.

Control it with a simple on/off switch and a pole changer (a DPDT switch with the outlet poles cross-wired) to control the direction.

An AC motor would work as well - direction control is trickier.
