I mean, how can you claim that this Universe just put itself together. Let's not get into how everything got to be today, but how else would everything come to be in the first place? Actually answer the question, don't just make some inflammatory comment.

So you believe the spontaneous creation of a perfect individual (God) is more likely than the spontaneous creation of dispirate matter? The big bang is not a fact, but it is a darn good working theory. The creation of a highly ordered perfect being out of nothing is ridiculous.

I think you've been clobbered in almost all the right places by the other folks, but I'd like to address a fundamental issue that's easily ignored.
When you ask why something "came to be," I take it you're asking how it got created. At first, that might sound like a profound question. But this is because everyone assumes they actually have a notion of what "creation" means. But do we?

The analogies I always hear are about things like "watches" needing "watch-makers." But what the guy does is to reorganize EXISTING material into what we call watch. So, is "reorganization" the same as "creation?" If not, what conceptual precedent do they have for any other form of the word? They've never seen, or heard of anyone else seeing, any other type of like process except re-organization.

Thus it would seem we arrogantly, and baselessly, attribute characteristics willy-nilly to a process for which we really have never known at all. In short, "creation" is an empty construct.

Who is anyone to say they know for sure? No one in this world knows how the universe came to be, and some hate not knowing so badly that they would rather make up a random being and say "he did it", rather than admit they don't know.
The universe being created out of thin air would have to be exactly how god came to be. And yes, he has to be created at some point, he can't just "always exist" as I've heard some Christians say.
People used to think all sorts of things - the world is flat, cigarettes are good for you, etc., until science proves them all wrong, which is exactly what will happen to all types of religion eventually.

My claim is that religion hasn't explained anything about the origin of the universe. The absence of a good explanation does not mean a lesser explanation (like God) is the truth.

Science doesn't set out to prove the non existence of something but prove the existence of a thing. So the burden is upon believers if you like, to prove the existence of God, not upon science to disprove it.

If you think about it deeply, postulating an almighty creator is just a very good way to finalize discussion about what came first. It misses out the fact that God had to come from somewhere first perhaps.

I claim the Universe always existed in some form.

Saying God made it just leads to the question of how did God come into existence and really didn't answer anything. You will give me the same answer about God--He was always here. It just added a step and you need evidence to add a step that doesn't explain anything.

What? How did the universe put itself together? How did god put himself together? It's the same thing. That's the most hypocritical thing I've ever heard. The only difference is that there is proof of how the universe continued from the mystical starting point to where we are today. There is proof that we evolved over millions of years. God just popped up and created the earth in seven days. Seven days? And where is the proof of that? Without using the bible as proof because that's just one source, not proof. Explain it to me please. Email me with your response.

First of all, did you ever hear me claim "the universe just put itself together"? No.

Second of all, who the hell knows? Are you 100% sure that that moron called "god" created us? If so, where's your proof.

Third of all, nobody knows how the heck we got here, nobody can answer this question, stupid, if anyone could answer this question and everyone knew, would we be arguing right now? Didn't think so

3rd crappiest question today

My only claim, as an atheist, is not being convinced of the existence of any gods.

Your question about the Universe really doesn't say anything for any gods. Human ignorance about a topic does not prove God's existence.

But to answer your question, look into the areas of quantum physics, cosmology, complexity theory, and self-organizing structures. You'd be surprised at how much information is out there.

No one claims to know anything for sure about the creation of the universe. Do you have some scientific proof that the scientist haven't discovered? If not, than you don't know either.

I agree with Amber... The Big Bang theory versus the world being magically created by some sky pixie .. I'll go with something that at least makes logical sense.
