well for what that person said, I honestly don't know about that...I've never heard that and I took hair courses...
here is what I do know though
switch to kids shampoo. it's not harsh on hair so your hair can grow instead of just trying to fix the damage
when washing your hair massage your scalp..it stimulates hair growth
if you dye your hair- stop.
if you relax your hair- stop
those damage your hair.
if you have split ends- get them cut off, there's no point in growing out split ended hair....the split ends will just run further up the hair causing damage.
avoid heat. flat irons/blow dryers/curlers

Hey there Allison, My professional advice is to keep up with your trims, 6 to 8 weeks no longer because you'll start to get breakage, or split ends especially if your hair is chemically treated. Take it easy on too much shampooing due to water being very dry and damaging on our hair and treat your self to a protein pack or hot oil from time to time. One more thing, focus on your scalp too, not just your hair get your blood circulating by scalp massage or simply run a comb over your whole scalp every now and then to get the blood flowing. Good old fashion patients is gonna be a factor for ya but good luck to you!

There are many methods to make our hair grow faster, shine , glitter in natural ways without using chemicals. Learn here https://bitly.im/aMKyO Men, and sometimes women, notice that their hair is thinning prematurely for several different reasons. Age, menopause, pregnancy, genetics, illness, and other factors all play a role in hair loss. Sure, you can use drugs or you can go in for a hair transplant or fusion, but sometimes the easiest, most inexpensive solution, is to try to stop hair loss naturally.

Stop putting chemicals in your hair, such as a perm and coloring. Since I've been natural, my hair has grown. I usually braid or pin it up. Prior to going natural, I had 3 inches. All the chemicals were stripping my hair oils - drying it out. I even did a Beyonce hair extensions and my hair grew 4 inches. I couldn't believe it. Good luck.

I'm african american also and I had problems growing my hair when I first relaxed it. But my suggestion is that you don't straighten your hair and apply heat that much(do it in a minimal amount). And also don't brush your hair or comb your hair that much. My hair is down my back and it grows really fast so something I'm doing must be right!

Consider braiding your hair - if you use extensions, keep them in no longer than a month.

well, if you want it to grow faster, then you should deffinatly try putting it up more often, and then using clips to keep it back... then, it should grow faster.
