It's okay to be shy, I was for the longest time. One day I met this guy a couple years older, while I was still shy. My sister turned to me and said "If you're always this shy, no guy will want you" and so on. It's something you have to get in your head. It may take sometime but you can do it. Realize how good of a person they are and realize there's nothing to be scared of. Hang out with him and get into a conversation. Talk about what you like, what he likes, food, sports, whatever. He's with you for a reason so make something up to talk about.

A good question is "what is it exactly that you DO have?"
You don't talk? What do you do? What exactly are you losing if you don't have access to his mind?
Are you asking questions that you want answers to, or just things you think are safe?
Shy is code for afraid. Afraid of what? Not being accepted? Being vulnerable? The funny thing about those feelings is that we all have them. We're never as alone as we like to think.
Ask questions. Show interest. Care. Ask for him what he wants to know about you... what he likes. Do not allow answers on appearance. That's dumb and temporary. We're all practicing getting old and wrinkly.

you could just start out by talking about how your day went, or the weather and then go into talking about something that you both enjoy. like for me and my girlfriend we take karate together so we talk about that. Good luck, dont let there be any awkward silences, those are never good.

Starting off in a new relationship the conversation is tough, before you guys talk make a list in your head before hand of things to talk about, he should join in and make it easier on you, but if he doesn't talk and you guys have nothing in common I would just move on to more personable guy.

Take it as it is right now. Evidently, he's not a talker either. Maturity will help you tremendously, you will go through many boyfriends and learn by each experience.
Talk to him about what interests HIM, not about yourself...#1 mistake.
