Honestly, if you plan to get too deep into watching calories, eventually you'll probably burn out on it. The best idea would be to replace your snacks with fruit, and replace any other high calorie foods with vegetables or other low calorie foods...preferably something you still enjoy. 30 minutes a day would be enough, but that's the minimum limit to really see results. The best workout should take at least 1 hour. That would be 15 minutes to stretch and warmup, 30 minutes of your complete workout, and 15 more minutes of stretching and warmdown. This would also prevent muscle soreness and/or injury. Obviously, elliptical machines are low-impact, and low resistance, which also means it won't provide the same results with a moderate workout, however, it will reduce your risk for injury. That should be taken into account for the intensity of your training. One last thing you need to realize is if you cut your diet too much too fast you will only make the issue worse because you will destroy your metabolism. Metabolism is recoverable, but it's much harder to regain than it is to lose.

Actually, about 45 min - 1 hr on the elliptical would be best. A cardio workout doesn't start burning stored calories until after half an hour, so you'd only be burning what you just ate, rather than actually reducing your body's weight. Cardio is definately the most important aspect of losing weight, though, so you're on the right track there.

If you are not screwing around and actually putting forth a good, hard effort that is enough to see results. If you watch what you eat, you could easily expect to lose a pound a week that way and your tone should improve somewhat as well.

If you keep it up for like..a week..then you will start seeing results..i think 30 minutes a day would be perfect.
