We all agree that we have secular government that’s not based on religious in the main time we are a country where freedom of religion is the constitution. Why some people making big deal out of it? Is it just because the Governor is black and some people still can’t get rid of segregation. Some white racists trying to find meaningless way to cause trouble to him or because in Government they are some evangelical extremists who don’t believe in other religions? Or are we explicitly not a secular Government but most of us don’t know?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the guy wanting to use his religion's book. There's supposed to be seperation of church and state, but we all know that's a joke. So, I'll attack this question from a human element.

The act of swearing an oath is the promising something based on everything you believe. It's supposed to be a very personal thing. If the guy is a muslim, then the Bible means nothing to him. I don't mean "he hates Jesus" or anything stupid like that. But the tenets...the faith... they aren't his. It's like asking him to swear on a phone book. Him wanting to use his book means he at least respects the job. Though he is a politician, he could just be pretending.

Major religious books are all pretty much the same at their core (respect and love everybody, be fair, honor your god, etc) and they get twisted the same way by wackos (You're the chosen people. Everybody different from you is your enemy and should be crushed without mercy or logic). Sometimes, I think Christianity has a stranglehold on this country's public face. And Christianity's extremist (televangelists, politicians (hypocrites), nutjobs stockpiling weapons and bibles in the woods), they get antsy when anybody else wants to be heard.

You're absolutely correct. Any opposition is probably just based on prejudice. Due to the actions of a few (and I don't mean crazy Islamic extremists or even just Muslims), Islam isn't really...popular right now. Why would anyone care what book another man puts his hands as long as he serious in the book's selection and it expresses his beliefs. It's not like the man picked a Playboy magazine. Let him use his book and be done with it.

Another question would be, what if you don't have a religion (like myself). Then what would you use?

The oath is made by the man (or woman), not the book. The book is nothing but a prop and I'd rather see them doing it on a real live person - maybe a midget so it doesn't hog the camera. That way, when they fail to live up to the oath the midget has the mission to take out the leader (yes, with extreme prejudice, a pre-selected executioner/assassin). Things like this keep me from getting too involved with politics.

Not every case is the same, but in Europe some countries have let Muslims in which is fine, but radicals have slipped in and the govts are being threatened(Spain, France, Britian) etc. They have been mandated by 'Allah' to create an all Islamic world by bloodshed and chaos. Anyone can look this up. Is there a Jew, Catholic, Buddhist, Christian etc in any Muslim govt in the world? If no, why not? If yes, where?

Too many white racists in USA who are still mad because the South lost and the blacks were freed. This country is run by idiotic Christians who aren't acceptable of other religions and and we are not a religion of the free since Bush seems to like persecuting all the Muslims abroad and at home.

There is nothing wrong with this in my eyes,,but as you know there are so many people in this world who are outraged from this i am sure...But you can never make everyone happy at the same time.. The faces that people see in government offices are changing and hopefully people will begin to really learn and understand other cultures & Religions..we can only hope & pray for this.....

Islam is REAL close to being branded as subversive. Not our fault really. It says right there in the Koran, in Arabic, of course, that you shouldn't trust / befriend / like Jews and Christians. It's really very disrespectful. A free society cannot therefore afford to give a blank check to Muslims.

I've seen some disturbing things in the Bible, as well. I really think a few other religions should be abandoned as well. They just teach us to kill each other. Dude we have online gaming now, who has time for church?

It's supposed to be secular, but in America it doesn't EXACTLY work that way.

Anyway... to answer your question... there's nothing wrong with it. As long as other people can swear on a Bible, he can swear on a Quran. Same thing to me. I'd swear over a copy of Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller (it's like a bible to me) lol

all I can say is that if the guy is a Muslim and the original purpose of that ceremony is that the politician commits himself to do his job right swearing on a book that matters to him, it makes absolute sense that he swears on Koran and not on the Bible.
