Depends on how infected your thumb is, if it's not really bad then what I do is get a cup and put some hot water (as hot as you can stand it) and pour about 2 table spoons of salt in there and stick your thumb in there till the water cools, repeat that a few times a day for a couple of days.
But if your thumb is more severly infected then you need to see a doctor or even a pharmacist, they could offer you some advice.
Good luck, hope your thumb gets better soon :)

Ok...well, firstly all three before me were off the mark to some extent, with the third poster being the most correct.
Completely ignore the moron telling you to self medicate with farm grade antibiotics. What you take may have no effect on what you have, HOWEVER, it could make it stronger. Not to mention that twit is giving you such advice not knowing what other medications or medical conditions you may have. His advice is not only stupid, it's dangerous.
Now, on to your thumb. Firstly, you need to give more information on what this thumb looks like. Secondly, is there any drainage coming from it? When you say infected, you really aren't giving enough details at all. Is this a hangnail that is oozing a clear drainage (good), or does it have puss (maybe good, maybe bad). What color, any major swelling, so on and so forth.
And in the end, none of that matters...because NOBODY here should be giving such medical advice on what to do. If it looks bad enough to give you real concern, then go to a local clinic and have them check it out. OR go in as a walk-in for your doctor. Often appointments are cancelled and they will fit ya in...you may have to wait a few hours, but you'd likely be waiting a good 6-10 hours at a ER for an "infected thumb" anyhow.
If it doesn't look that bad, put some hydrogen peroxide on it to clean it out. Contrary to what some would tell ya, don't ever use rubbing alcohol as it destroys skin cells and slows down healing.

It depends on how infected it is....if it's draining, you really need to go to the ER...let them take a look at it...get you on some antibiotics...they will clean it for you and teach you how to keep it clean.
I'm hesitant to give you any advice, because I don't know your medical history and I don't know how bad your infection is.

Don't mess around with that. Tell the receptionist you've an INFECTED thumb, they won't let you wait 3 weeks. If they still do, ER is your best chance. You need anti-biotics NOW!

Go to any Farm Supply Store and buy animal grade tetracycline about $5.00. I do that and put it into 500mg. capsules.Like dump out cheap herbs. I take 4 a day, and it works.
