in its simplest form you can call your self whatever you want at any time as long as you do dot do it for fraudulent purposes. However you can change your name by deed poll. most solicitors charge 25 to 50 quid for this service. Mind you be careful i have seen up to 500 charged.

Go to UK Deed Poll website (if in UK obviously) it costs around £50 to get the legal documentation plus legal copies (they aso keep copies on record in case you lose them by mistake) which come in very useful when sending to the various official bodies. Ensure you let the bank, Inland revenue etc (all listed on the deed poll website in full) know to avoid any unnecessary legal battles. I've found the most diffcult bit is remembering it when introducing yourself

Pop down to local Citizen Advice Bureau, get a form called a 'Statutory Declaration' you can either take it to a Solicitor to be signed, or wait out side a Court - ~Solicitor may charge you a nominal fee. So long as you are not absconding from paying any bills or fines etc. you may owe there shouldn't be a problem.

If in the UK, as long as it is not for illegal purposes you may call yourself by whatever name you chose.
If you wish to make it formal, you can draw up a change of name by Deed Poll, this can be done by a solicitor and is not complicated or expensive.

The Social Security office handles it here in the US. It is pretty easy, just forms to fill out. You will need all of your present ID and birth certificate. After the Social Security you need to have your name changed at the DMV, who will NOT do it before you change your SSN to your new name.
