If he doesnt stop I will have to give him back, because I have been really sick, usually pets dont bother me at all but with all the shedding (Handfuls at a time) it has affected me. I asked the vet if it would stop, he said maybe or maybe not, he is a long haired cocker spaniel/spitz, and they get nervous and shed alot. Does anyone know anything to keep a dog from shedding that much.

Return the dog to the shelter and next time do a bit more research before adopting. Any dog with spitz in it's background is going to shed like crazy. You might want to think about a poodle, a shih-tzu, a lhasa apso, or other non shedding purebred dog (do not fall for the designer "mixed" breeds that say they don't shed - the breeders are lying!) Stay away from breeds like labs, shelties, collies, huskies, etc... they shed lots.

Give the dog back so you both have a quality life.

I really don't understand how you could get a dog knowing you have allergies. You've just added another mark next to that poor dog's name of homes that have failed.

Have you given him a bath? Maybe it was something in the shampoo that was used.

If I were you, I would just go ahead and take the dog back. You need to research things BEFORE you get a pet, of any kind.

Clean your house off his sheddings and have the dog regularly shaved.

Shedding is a natural biological phenomenon and is increased depending on the dog's diet.

Ask your vet which food or what diet plan can your dog have to reduce the shedding at a minimum.

Then go to your medical doctor and have yourself checked. If your doctor says the dog has to go, then the dog has to go.

Most dogs shed a lot, regardless of where you got him from.

Try going to your allergist and seeing if you can take anything to help with your allergies. Also, try grooming your dog daily to help control his shedding problem.

Take the dog to a professional groomer. Then start taking allergy medication.
