A setting for toast that is not burnt is usually around 4 but if your making a bagel or an english muffin or toaster waffle you may want to toast it at about 6 or 7. Different settings because not everyone likes their food the same way and to cook longer for certain foods.

First of all some bread toasts more quickly than others,
the more fresh and moist it is the longer it will take to toast Some grained breads take longer than most bleached white breads, so with some toasters you'll just
have to experiment. We use a toaster oven for toast now
since our toaster burned out and the same principle is
used.

Different bread toasts at different rates. Store bought bread toasts very quickly but with my homemade bread I have to toast it twice (on the highest setting) to get it golden brown.
And as a previous answerer said some people like burnt toast. I know I do!!
