Thats a really good thing to do...that kindness will come back to you.
When deciding on a charity you should think about what causes you care about. I am very into the environment so I donate to the Sierra Club, Atlanta Riverkeeper Society and World Wildlife Fund. I also care very much about the AIDS crisis so Ive donated to AmFar. Some people like to keep their money local so they donate to local charities, others donate to impoverished people overseas.
When you've done some research and decided on a few charities check them out with the Better Business Bureau (they have it in America and Im sure there's something similar in England) they can tell you if it's a reputable charity so you can make sure your money is going where it is needed most.

It's hard to choose one especially this time of year where we are getting bombarded with different charities asking for $. I also donate to a couple of charities over the course of the year.
The only advice that I could give is to choose one that has some kind of personal meaning to you. Something that really gives you a feeling of altruism towards it's particular goal.
Still not sure? consider service or volunteering for a particular organization. It will give you a better idea of what they actually do while donating the very precious resource of time.

I would look for small charities doing big work. Here in Maine, one of the Ophan charities doing great work, without mention in the newspapers, this time of year is the Hospitality House Inc.
We help people avoid homelessness through our Nationwide hotline. Plus we work on the cause of poverty. Poverty is the number one cause of homelessness, being hungry, without heat and violence.
In the past twenty years our group, has been staffed by a volunteer who feels better at averting displacement and human suffering, then at fundraising.
Our volunteer staff personhas written a booklet its full with ideas to end poverty http://www.angelfire.com/in4/lightfootlane/
One of the best ideas is to give 100% of the people in need 100% of their need. This is what the Christain good book says. Am sure the other religions have a similar vein of discussion. To trust in the higher power, and give.
I get many folks calling our hotline, at this time of year wanting to give turkey's and clothes. I am greatful to All. But Non-profits needs donations at other times of the years also, not everyone need to wait for the Winter Holidays.
So am sure you can find a good charity which gives atleast 50% of your gift to those in need, in the UK

You should pick one that you could trust and that you can donate more than just money. I suggest The Salvation Army were you can donate clothes shoes and food as well. A lot of people say you should go for a bigger charities like to help the Hurricane Catrina victims, but I say start a little closer to home. I hope this helps you. and good luck.

I give to a charity here in Montreal, it is called Dans La Rue. It helps street kids get on their feet . Most of them aren`t on the streets by choice! I`m sure you must have something similar in the East End.

HI Tina
I listened to an interview in Church sunday with Bono from U2 and his call to the Christian Chuch to help the poor in Africa. It was a very powerful service. You can do a search to find out what he is doing to help.
God is using Bono and his influence. Bono gave a sermon to 70,000 pastors about the plight of the poor. Wish you could have seen the interview.
As a result some 400 children were picked up by our church alone through an oranization called "Compassion International". My wife and I picked a boy named Kofondo. We are not rich ourselves not by any means but we try and help where we can. 40.00 a month will go towards his needs 8.00 of that will go to pay for the drugs needed to fight AIDS in his community. The rest will go for his education and basic needs.

There is a website:www.give.org that you can check the non profit status of charities and see if they meet the standards of a charitable organization. I use this website to decide who to donate money to.

Screw the Charity's. If you have homeless, make sandwiches and such and give it out. Maybe a homeless shelter but most organized charities are crooks IMHO.

Figure out the issue you're most passionate about, and I guarantee there will be a charity that sponsors that cause.
