We use a model train. They're fairly inexpensive -- doesn't have to be anything fancy -- and freak out the cats enough to stay out of the tree without hurting them. After about a day, just seeing the train -- whether it's moving or not -- keeps them away. And it's fun to watch it run around the the base of the tree.

Don't try the water thing. It only teaches your cat to not touch the tree when u are there. They will start again when you leave. Try aluminum foil. It is cheap and cats hate it. If all else fails keep him in another room. Remember the cat will naturally be curious about the tree. Never try to punish him. Keeping him outside could just make him hate you

Well this is very normal for cats to do...I think every cat goes through this stage at one point in time. Put a little fence up in the doorway to where the tree is, or keep the cat in a specific room/rooms over the holidays.

Put orange peels around the tree or just hang them on it as decorations. They hate the smell of oranges. I'm not sure if this works for chrismas trees, but it makes cats stop scratching furnature. if that doesnt work, just keep a small spray bottle around and when he hops into the tree, just squirt him a little and he should stop in no time.

I would probably keep him in another room or put a fence around the tree

squirt guns and loud noises are excellent kitty training tools, as are flyswatters.
give kitty a squirt of water when he gets too close to the tree or suddenly and rapidly turn up the stereo to full volume each time kitty gets near the tree-i know it will keep him away. it worked to keep mine from eating my bamboo plant.
