Many miss the point of spiritual leadership, if he had made an effort with them, and acknowledged wrongs as such he would have faired better. Ones own blood can be the most difficult

the priest ELI actually let his sons ball the women who came to the temple to worship God. They did it right in the temple chambers.
Eli knew of this and looked the other way. So God punished him severely. him and his two sons.
ELI was not zealous for God's holy Name and the awe and respect which God deserves.

Parents can lead and guide their children, but they can't make them do, or not do the things which they do. Each of us has free will and we are the only ones responsible for our actions ultimately, so the same in Eli's day. He certainly was not pleased with their behavior!
