My dog has always been a house dog but the last two years her coat has gotten less and less heavy. She is in good health and eats very expensive food and takes vit. Is it milder winters? Different house lighting from the sun? With 5 years of age her body has gotten the idea she does not need a heavy coat?

While I was in my veterinarians office a couple of weeks ago I was reading something that said house dogs (as opposed to dogs who are kept outside) shed all year long because they don't have the temperature fluctuations that outside dogs have. In other words, they don't build up the winter coat because they don't need it because they stay toasty inside the house. The warmth of the house makes them shed hair that would otherwise remain on them for their winter coat.

"Do you think that house dogs have lighter weight coats?"

Absolutely,,,, no different than a dog living in southern Texas will develop a lighter winter coat than one living in North Dakota.

Dogs like humans lose hair as they age.I think it varies from dog to dog.

I don't know! Your dog would have stayed the same way if you kept it outside!
