You're not going to avoid hurting him. But you'll only make it worse if you drag it out and make him confused. Be honest and quick and uncompromising. He'll heal if you handle it cleanly, if you drag it out and make him crazy, he'll resent you forever.

You can't. There will always be hurt no matter how you tell him. And the longer you wait the more it will hurt. Tell him you love him, but not the kind of love that is going to amount to anything anymore... it'll sting but it will be better than when (if) he asks you to marry him and you say no

He is gonna be hurt one way or the other. I have never had anyone break up with me before. I have always done the breaking up and no matter what, the guy ends up hurt and pissed off. Tell me more about your situation...are you in high school? tell him you aren't ready for a relationship, but don't go dating anyone right away! do you live together? breaking up with someone you live with is a painintheass. are you just dating socially? tell him you just want to be friends or you don't have time for a relationship.

It's really tough to do that. But ive had to break up with someone who was in love with me b4 so i get where your coming from. See, what i did was i honestly told him that he was a great guy and i like him but that click that we had was gone. Just tell him you need some space and your not ready for a committed relationship right now. Good Luck!

You can't, but you owe him the truth. Explain that although you still have feelings for him, you are not "in love" with him. Tell him you need to have some time for yourself.
It's always difficult to tell someone something you know will hurt them. Staying with someone because you don't want to "hurt" them is far worse for both of you!
Good luck.

Tell him how you feel. Tell him that it's not him. You just want to do other things for a while. Tell him that you still love him but your not in love with him any more.

My sister broke up with her bf (boyfriend) after 3 years. Probally the same reason. She was ready to move on. My sister broke up with him around Nov.21 i would have to say and she already has a bf.
Just break up with him and get over it. Move on with your life. Dont spend time thinking how he will feel. Just worry about yourself and just break up with him. IN PERSON!

There is no way to tell him without hurting him. If he didn't feel pain that would mean he has no feelings and that means he is incapable of love.

That's tough; usually people sense this sort of thing, buy he doesn't sound like he's getting it. Unless you want to come right out and tell him "we're done", then you'll have to use subtle things like calling less, etc until he catches on. Good luck, I don't envy you.

Just DON'T do what my ex girl friend did. She waited till she could tell me on my birthday, in Mcdonalds about five minutes before I had to head off to work.
