The area close to the border between north and south Korea was called Mig Alley. The USSR sent Mig Aircraft into North Korea to fight for North Koreans. This gave them a chance to test their pilots and aircraft against ours. They did fairly well at first until new models of American Jets were brought in. During the early and the late period of the war the US had control of the Air. The existing North Korean Air Force was taken out very early in the war. Before American ground forces were there in large numbers. The USSR after there loses began going up withdrew their aircraft from the area.

The stalemate that stopped the war had more to do with the introduction of Chinese troops into the conflict that any effect of air power.

"MiG Alley" is the name given by U.S. Air Force pilots to the northwestern portion of North Korea, where the Yalu River empties into the Yellow Sea. (thats the border between North Korea and China, It had nothing to do with stalemate) During the Korean War, it was the site of numerous dogfights between U.S. fighter jets and those of the Communist forces, particularly the Soviet Union. The F-86 Sabre and the Soviet-built MiG-15 '*****' were the aircraft used throughout most of the conflict, with the area's nickname derived from the latter. Because it was the site of the first large-scale jet-vs.-jet air battles, MiG Alley is considered the birthplace of jet fighter combat.

Mig Alley was in the northern part of that country, and southern China. It was where Sabers and Migs fought everyday. We were to stay away from there, but we would go there just to fight. Most times it was said they were chasing Migs.
We had about a 12-1 hit kill ratio by the end of the war
