"As the Government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion.."(Treaty of Tripoli, 1797 - signed by President John Adams)

"The civil rights of none shall be abridged on account of religious belief or worship, nor shall any national religion be established, nor shall the full and equal rights of conscience be in any manner, or on any pretence, infringed.'' - James Madison (Original wording of the First Amendment; Annals of Congress 434 (June 8, 1789).)

So again, what's the non-religious argument our government has to not allow gay marriage?

The non-religious argument is very simple. Majority rules in America. The fact is the vast majority of Americans do not want gay marriage. We want to protect traditional beliefs, as the recent elections have shown! Was it 7 states that had a vote on gay marriage and only 1 state (Arizona) passed it? The people have spoken.

God Bless America!

The religious Right has been waving the banner of "Christian Nation" for decades. It is their hope that they will re frame the constitution based on their belief as to give them Cart Blance to amend and repel everything that does not suit the model of America they want.

These people used to be Dixiecrats until the civil rights act was signed, then they fled to become Republicans to try to build a political party based on what they could no longer get as Democrats.

These people believe in Manifest Destiny, that this country is the "God given right". No amount of fact is going to change their view of what could be.

I don't think they do. Many of the founding fathers believed in the Judeo-Christian beliefs as indicated in their writings - some didn't. One of the main reasons people wanted to settle in this land was for religious and spiritual freedom - they didn't want a one church form of government and that was the reason for separation of church and state. Freedom in worshiping as they believed.

well Madison wasn't a conservative, and that's not the first amendment. Conservatives believe in moral things like same sex marriages, pro-life, prohibition, but people like Hamilton started to shoot that time stuff down and viewed the constitution as obscure guidelines while people like Jefferson believed it should be taken literally word from word.

They left europe to escape from religious persecution and intended to PREVENT persecution from hapining meaning you can believe in what ever you want and will not get in trouble for it. They were strong believers in thier faith and it's impossible to create something w.o involving your faith.
