Trust your instincts. You are doing what's best for the puppies if you keep her away from them. It is easy for a puppy to bite or annoy the beagle and the beagle may bite or nip the puppy. Your cocker is probably very protective of the puppies and she might bite the beagle if she thinks he is a threat.

Also, at 4 weeks old you shouldn't expose the pups to other dogs or people yet. Wait until you get the first round of distemper shots before they are with other dogs.

When they are 7-8 weeks old then you can try again with the beagle. That is when they are learning their socializing skills, then when they leave home at 10 weeks old they will be ready for their new family.

Good luck!

well i know sort-of a lot about dogs so i can probably help a little bit, the mother of the puppies might be mad that the beagle is around her puppies so that's probably why the beagle seems afraid. The beagle probably doesn't want to hurt the puppies, but maybe the mom of them, I would keep them away from eachother as much as possible.

I would keep the female beagle away from the pups because the mother of these pups will fight with anyone who tries to get at her pups....until they get a little older.Whoever takes care of the mother dog will be able to handle them a little....but no children and no other dogs.....Your instincts are right.....Good for you!!!

the beagle should not be around the pups.. not only becuase of fear she might hurt them but more importantly because she might expose them to sickness.. presumably she goes for walks - a healthy dog can transport the Parvo Virus on its paws and bring it home from the park or whereever and give it to the pups

the thing about bitches with pups is they can get very defensive and the cock er spaniel might hurt the other female if it gets close to the pups also try and get the scent of the pups onto a teddy and keep putting it next to the dog your unsure of, is this other dog good around other animals and young children in general if so i wouldn't worry and its better to let them get used to each other now

I think you should try to watch the beagle, and see what she is up to.

You need to keep her away until the puppies are older. You don't want to risk the mom attacking her - you'd have a major fight.
