I am thinking of being a Handyman, Is this a needed service?. I am good with tools and did alot of Home Improvemt work over the years. Or should I be a Home Improvemt contractor. My vision of a Handyman is a out of work fat old Man who has a drinking problem.

I'm sure you can find handymen with out substance abuse problems and are very handy ,but a handyman in most cases is someone that can do everything but can't do any of it very well. Should you become a home improvement contractor simply because your good with tools and did alot around the house? God help those that hire you. do it yourself shows on tv make everything look easy, manufacturers claim the same crap. Go to work for a contractor and learn the real practices of building trades. People are always proud and beaming when they do improvments around the house...but if you paid to have the same thing done the standards of what is good and acceptable work always increase 10 fold.

You make me laugh..... Being a handyman is a noble profession... IF.... IF.. you know what you are doing. Before going on into the home improvement contractor business, I would make sure that you knew what you are doing in the handyman business first.. Being a handyman is NOT for just anyone....

In my field as an interior decorator it is needed. I have many clients that need some small projects done such as putting up crown molding, laying down tile, or if something needs to be fixed, etc... Most contractors are too busy to do the small jobs or don't want to take on the project because it is small.

You should market yourself to decorators and designers. Also join a business networking group in your area to help increase your business. Such as www.BNI.com

I have met with a gentleman from a company called Mr. Handyman. It is a franchise and I wish they were in my territory. www.mrhandyman.com. I am hoping one comes to my area soon.

Hope this helps.
