It's spelled, and pronounced differently, depending on what Italian dilect you are speaking....Capisco is the way Sicilians say and spell it. But then again, how many languages always sound different than how they are spelled.

In Italian capici means 'you understand', or as a question 'do you understand?' The root of the verb is capire 'to understand'. capisco means 'I understand'.

Being raised by 1st generation Italians as I was growing up - they spoke little English even after being here for 50 + years - it is pronounced "ca-peesh". I always heard it said after giving directions or instructions, as a question. "Capisce?"

The verb "to understand" in Italian is "Capire".
But in Italian language verbs end in different ways depending on verb temps and pronouns. And you have different forms depending on who you are talking to.

For example the question "Do you understand" can be translated in 3 different ways:
If you want ask "Do you understand" to a friend, you say: "Capisci?"
But if you want ask it to more friends, it's "Capite?"
And if you want ask it to someone (a single person) using a formal way, for example if you are talking to your boss at job, you say: "capisce?"

...and so on, so if you want to know the correct spelling of understand in Italian you have to give us the complete sentence.

well there's different endings for different pronouns.... if you're gonna say "do you (more than one person) understand... it's capite. but then if you want like everyone it would be capiscono... if you were just talking like "i understand... it would be capisco.... there's a lot of different conjugations of the verb
