just got hdtv put in from comcast & they said i can only use their remote??

That's a bunch of bunk! I have a Motorola Comcast HD receiver/DVR. You can use any universal remote for it. Of course, some will be better than others. Logitech Harmony remotes are the best because you can customize it, plus they have the Comcast Motorola set-top box as an option in the configuration wizard. Before my Harmony remote, I had a Philips universal remote. Some functions worked and some didn't. The DVR functions didn't, but the cable box features did.
