This behavior may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
• One or more of the random access memory (RAM) modules that are installed on your computer are faulty.
• The RAM configuration is incompatible with Windows XP.

RESOLUTION
To troubleshoot this behavior, follow these steps: 1. Remove some of the memory modules that are installed on the computer. Leave at least the RAM that is required for the computer to start and run Windows XP.

The recommended RAM to run Windows XP is 128 megabytes (MB). The minimum is 64 MB, and the maximum is 4 gigabytes.

For example, if two 256-MB memory modules are installed on your computer, remove one of the memory modules.
2. Restart your computer, and then run the Setup program:a. Insert the Windows XP Setup CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive, start the computer, and then click OK to select the first option screen to install a copy of Windows XP.
b. Click Accept, and then follow the instructions on the screen to complete the Windows XP installation.

3. If you again receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, go to step 4.
4. Remove a different memory module, or install the RAM in a different memory slot.
5. Restart your computer, and then rerun Setup.

You may have to restart your computer several times to identify the specific memory modules that are not working correctly.

If this is a continual problem (which it sounds like it is) then the likely culprit is bad hardware. It could be that your cideo card is malfunctioning, or more likely that some portion of the RAM memory is defective. A local computer shop should be able to analize the problem and provide a solution. Alternatively, you could try swapping out components and see when the problem goes away. If you paid for the extended warenty on your system, then take advantage of it, but DONT let them format your drive. Again, service is almost always better at a local tech shop.

Good luck

PS, DON'T do a system restore, that does not help hardware problems. Its likely a waste of time in situations like yours

First thing is try to save all your personal files to a removable disk. Then see if you can do a system restore in the safe mode.
You could try the System Restore which takes you back to a time when your computer was working good. Go To:
start
programs
accessories
systems tools
system restore
This process is completely reversable. And does not remove your personal files. Just go back one checkpoint at a time until your puter is working good again.
You may need to reinstall any recent software programs, but it is a quick fix when you dont know what else to do.

I've seen BSODs (Blue Screen of Death) happen and simply be resolved by rebooting into safe mode (like you did). I'd back up your important data just in case you continue to have the problem (however, that being said, you can usually recover data from a hard drive that doesn't allow you to boot from it any longer).

Is this the first time you saw the error message? If so, try rebooting the computer normally. It sounds like you ran out of memory and crashed hard. I wouldn't start by messing with the BIOS. These things happen, it's probably no big deal.

Don't re-boot.

You need to shut it down completely.
Then re-start it and see what happen.

It is unusual for the computer to shut down to protect itself from damage. This usually only happen if you did put some new hardware in it which is not compatible with your computer.

If you are using a Microsoft software system, try logging into microsoft.com and they have several helpsites that you can look over. They also have technicians you can email for assistance. You need to tell them the problem and they usually can help you. It could also be a spammer attempting to get you to log into their system so they can attach spyware or other harmful software to your system. I would recommend contacting Microsoft or take your computer to a repair shop and ask them to look at it for you.

I've never heard of anyone being able to go online in "safe mode". Not all programs load in safe mode.
